  • Mission statement

The mission of the Department of Mass Communications is to teach the theory and practice of mass communications to students dedicated to pursuing successful professional careers or further education.

The most compelling purpose of the Department is instruction, accomplished through the pursuit, assimilation, and dissemination of knowledge and experience in the classroom and in professional settings. We teach mass communications practices for the production and delivery of various forms of content through interrelated systems and technologies. We prepare students to function effectively in competitive mass communications professions; to foresee, lead and adapt to change in those professions and the larger society; to uphold professional ethics; and to take seriously their responsibility as society's public communicators. All instruction is grounded in the liberal arts tradition of broad-based education enhanced by critical thinking. In sum, we seek to produce educated citizens as well as skilled professionals.

Faculty and students engage in service to the University, community and professions. Faculty also conduct empirical, applied, and creative research to serve the social, cultural, economic and educational needs of society, especially those of the University's primary service area.
