    191. POPULAR CULTURE: RADIO, TELEVISION, AND FILM. 3 cr. A look at the electronic and film media from the consumer's perspective. For non-RTVF majors only.

    200. ORIENTATION TO RADIO, TELEVISION, AND FILM. 0 cr. An orientation seminar with emphasis on academic expectations, prefessional development, employment opportunties, and outcomes assessment. Grades of CR (credit) or NC (no-credit) will be awarded. Prerequisite: Credit or concurrent enrollment in RTVF 203. (Offered fall semesters only)

    203. INTRODUCTION TO RADIO AND TELEVISION. 3 cr. Principles and practices of the electronic media; historical perspective of the development of radio, television, and cable; and an introduction to programming concepts and the technical terminology of the electronic media.

    205. ANNOUNCING. 3 cr. The role of the announcer; principles of communication in the electronic media; voice and diction, including foreign pronunciation; and techniques appropriate for commercials, news, sports, interviews, and music programs. Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment in RTVF 206.

    206. ANNOUNCING LABORATORY. 1 cr. Application of principles covered in RTVF 205. A $10 fee is charged each student to help defray expenses related to this course. Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment in RTVF 205.

    210. EVOLUTION OF FILM. 3 cr. The history of the motion picture medium focused upon the development of narrative techniques, technical capabilities, and the purpose for which films were made. Survey of sources for film study that supplement actual films. A $10 fee is charged each student to help defray expenses related to this course. (Same as English 210)

    217. BROADCAST COPYWRITING. 3 cr. Designed to develop an awareness of basic broadcast writing and the relationship between the writer and the consumer of the electronic media. Preparation of short-form copy for radio and television, including public service, advertising, and promotional announcements and campaigns. Prerequisite: ENGL 102, and typing skills.

    237. BROADCAST NEWS WRITING. 3 cr. Concepts, theories, and practices of writing news copy for the electronic media, including information sources, broadcast writing style, copy editing, and news judgement. Prerequisite: ENGL 102, and typing skills. (Formerly RTVF 317)

    300. DIRECTED STUDY-ETV. 3 cr. Selected studies in the electronic media and/or film. Content varies. Prerequisite: consent of advisor and instructor.

    301. AUDIO PRODUCTION. 3 cr. Study of theory and techniques of audio production for radio, video, film, and music recording, including principles, equipment, pre-production, production, and post-production. Prerequisite: Sophomore standing, and concurrent enrollment in RTVF 302. (Formerly RTVF 401)

    302. AUDIO PRODUCTION LABORATORY. 1 cr. Application of principles covered in RTVF 301. A $10 fee is charged each student to help defray expenses related to this course. Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment in RTVF 301. (Formerly RTVF 402)

    304. FILM ANALYSIS AND CRITICISM. 3 cr. Studies in the theory and criticism of film; analysis of film as an art form and as an entertainment medium; and evaluation of trends in film presentations. A $10 fee is charged each student to help defray expenses related to this course. Prerequisite: Sophomore standing. (Same as English 304)

    308. PRACTICUM. 1 cr. Maximum, 2 hrs. A supervised on-campus opportunity for the student to observe, analyze, and apply the methods and techniques of the industry. May be repeated once for credit, provided the second practicum experience is used to explore a different professional area. A maximum of three combined hours of RTVF 308 and 408 credit can be applied toward the degree requirements. Prerequisite: Completion of at least 12 hours of RTVF coursework, and permission of advisor.

    309. RADIO AND TELEVISION PROGRAMMING. 3 cr. Analysis of program forms used in the electronic media, effective program structure, and consideration of the audience in relation to programing. Prerequisite: Sophomore standing.

    314. FILM PRODUCTION. 3 cr. The basic principles of cinematography, production techniques, equipment utilization, and editing in 8mm and 16mm film-making. Prerequisite: Sophomore standing, and concurrent enrollment in RTVF 315.

    315. FILM PRODUCTION LABORATORY. 1 cr. Application of principles covered in RTVF 314. A $10 fee is charged each student to help defray expenses related to this course. Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment in RTVF 314.

    331. VIDEO PRODUCTION. 3 cr. Introduction to in-studio video production, including camera techniques and effects, production equipment utilization, and lighting. Prerequisite: Sophomore standing, and concurrent enrollment in RTVF 332.

    332. VIDEO PRODUCTION LABORATORY. 1 cr. Application of principles covered in RTVF 331. A $10 fee is charged each student to help defray expenses related to this course. Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment in RTVF 331.

    337. BROADCAST NEWS REPORTING. 3 cr. Advanced experience in news gathering and writing for the electronic media. Development of presentation and performance skills, including interviewing, newscasting, and special events reporting. Prerequisite: RTVF 205, 206, 237, and concurrent enrollment in RTVF 338.

    338. BROADCAST NEWS REPORTING LABORATORY. 1 cr. Application of principles covered in RTVF 337. A $10 fee is charged each student to help defray expenses related to this course. Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment in RTVF 337.

    340. BROADCAST AND CABLE ADVERTISING. 3 cr. Introduction to advertising history and practices in the electronic media, including structure of the broadcast and cable advertising industry, campaign development, buying and selling time, and social responsibility. Prerequisite: RTVF 217, and Sophomore standing. (Formerly RTVF 423)

    341. ELECTRONIC NEWS GATHERING. 3 cr. The production precepts and practices of news coverage for the electronic media. Special attention is given to field audio and camera techniques, visualization, lighting, and editing. Prerequisite: RTVF 237, and concurrent enrollment in RTVF 342.

    342. ELECTRONIC NEWS GATHERING LABORATORY. 1 cr. Application of principles covered in RTVF 341. A $10 fee is charged each student to help defray expenses related to this course. Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment in RTVF 341.

    400. SENIOR PORTFOLIO. 0 cr. Compilation and presentation of senior portfolio. Includes professional interview and outcomes assessment. To be taken during the student;s final spring semester. Grades of CR (credit) or NC (no-credit) will be awarded (Offered spring semesters only)

    425. SEMINAR IN RADIO, TELEVISION, AND FILM. 3 cr. Maximum, 6 hrs. Scholarly, in-depth research of contemporary subjects in the electronic and/or film media. Topics will vary from semester to semester. Prerequisite: Junior standing.

    491. DIRECTED STUDY. 1-3 cr. Maximum, 6 hrs. Individualized study in the electronic or film media. Prerequisite: Approval of department head.

    For Undergraduates and Graduates

    408. INTERNSHIP. 1-2 cr. Maximum, 2 hrs. Limited to advanced students. A field experience under the general supervision of a faculty member and the direct supervision of an industry professional. Application must be made in the first month of the semester prior to enrolling in RTVF 408. A maximum of three combined hours of RTVF 308 and 408 credit can be applied toward the degree requirements. Prerequisite: RTVF 308, completion of at least 24 hours of RTVF coursework, an earned GPA of 2.5 or higher in all courses required for the degree, and approval of faculty advisory committee.

    411. SCRIPT WRITING. 3 cr. Examination and preparation of scripts for all long-program formats, with emphasis on writing and marketing radio, television, and film drama and documentaries. Prerequisite: RTVF 217.

    414. ADVANCED FILM PRODUCTION. 3 cr. The sound motion picture from concept to completion. Participation in producing a 16mm motion picture. Prerequisite: RTVF 314, 315, and concurrent enrollment in RTVF 415.

    415. ADVANCED FILM PRODUCTION LABORATORY. 1 cr. Application of principles covered in RTVF 414. A $10 fee is charged each student to help defray expenses related to this course. Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment in RTVF 414.

    417. BROADCAST NEWS PRODUCING. 3 cr. Newsroom procedures for the electronic media, including story assignment, copy editing, news story packaging, newscast management, and organizing and managing newsroom operations. Students will prepare newscasts for the electronic media. Prerequisite: RTVF 337, 338, and Junior standing.

    422. BROADCAST NEWS RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES. 3 cr. A study of the social and ethical issues which impact the responsible electronic news practitioner. Prerequisite: RTVF 337, 338, and Junior standing.

    424. AUDIENCE MEASUREMENT AND EVALUATION. 3 cr. A study of the elements and methods of audience and other related research, and application of audience measurement to the electronic media. Prerequisite: RTVF 309, and Junior standing.

    427. STATION MANAGEMENT. 3 cr. Organization and administration of broadcast stations and of other electronic media systems: day-to-day operation, community ascertainment, promotion, and economic aspects of electronic media management. Prerequisite: Junior standing.

    431. ADVANCED VIDEO PRODUCTION. 3 cr. Consideration of all elements in video production from concept to completion. Prerequisite: RTVF 331, 332, and concurrent enrollment in RTVF 432.

    432. ADVANCED VIDEO PRODUCTION LABORATORY. 1 cr. Application of principles covered in RTVF 431. A $10 fee is charged each student to help defray expenses related to this course. Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment in RTVF 431.

    440. BROADCAST SALES AND PROMOTION. 3 cr. An in-depth study of the electronic media sales process from "prospecting" to servicing accounts, with emphasis on adapting traditional sales techniques to the special problems of the electronic media. Prerequisite: Junior standing.

    450. BROADCAST REGULATION. 3 cr. The study of electronic media law and of the Federal Communications Commission's rules and procedures, including an examination of current trends of the Commission and the possible effect of each of these on the industry and society. Prerequisite: Junior standing.

    504. ELECTRONIC MEDIA CRITICISM. 3 cr. Critical methodologies and analysis of electronic media content and programming with emphasis on aesthetic, historical, social, cultural, and industrial factors affecting audience response.

    508. INTERNSHIP. 1-3 cr. Maximum, 3 hrs. On-the-job supervisory experience in the electronic or film media. Students will have responsibility for over-seeing projects in their respective facets of the industry appropriate for their educational level and achievements. Application must be made in the first month of the semester prior to enrolling in RTVF 508. A maximum of three combined credit hours in RTVF 408, 415, 432, and 508 can be applied toward the graduate degree plan. Prerequisite: Completion of 12 hours or more toward graduate degree plan, and approval of faculty advisory committee.

    520. EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES. 3 cr. Exploration of electronic communication technologies as they develop.

    525. SEMINAR IN RADIO, TELEVISION, AND FILM. 3 cr. Maximum, 6 hrs. Scholarly, in-depth research of contemporary subjects in the electronic and/or film media. Topics will vary from semester to semester.

    529. VIDEO PRODUCTION FOR PROFESSIONALS. 3 cr. Training in the use and applications of video in education, personnel training, management, employee relations, etc. Lecture/laboratory format with emphasis on hands-on studio and field applications. A $10 fee is charged each student to help defray expenses related to this course.

    530. ISSUES IN AND IMPACT OF ELECTRONIC MEDIA AND FILM. 3 cr. An investigation of contemporary social, moral, ethical, and political issues of electronic and film media and their effects on society and the individual.

    540. COMPARATIVE BROADCASTING. 3 cr. A study of international electronic media systems, philosophies, methodologies and their comparative strengths and weaknesses, including their current and potential sociological, political, and economic effects.

    591. DIRECTED STUDY. 1-3 cr. Maximum, 6 hrs. Individualized study in the electronic or film media. Prerequisite: Approval of department head.

    599. THESIS. Maximum, 6 cr.
